Why Agencies Use Broad Match Keywords on HVAC Accounts (and What It Costs You)

Why marketing agencies run broad match keywords on HVAC Google Ads accounts and what it costs

The short answer

Broad match tells Google to show your ad for anything it decides is related to your keyword, which for furnace repair includes job searches, how-to searches and product shoppers. Agencies use it because it is fast, it spends the budget reliably, and it keeps the click numbers on the report looking healthy. The cost lands on you: in a typical HVAC account a third to half of broad-match spend goes to searches that could never become a job. The fix is phrase and exact match on buying searches, a real negative keyword list, and someone reading the search terms report every week. ReBoost Ads builds every campaign that way, in your own account, from $197 a month.

Open the search terms report in your HVAC Google Ads account and read the first twenty rows. If your agency built it the usual way, you will find things like "hvac salary," "hvac jobs near me," "how to become an hvac tech," "hvac school," and "furnace won't turn on reddit." You paid for every one of those clicks. None of them was a homeowner who wanted to hire you. This is what broad match keywords do to an HVAC account, and it is worth understanding why agencies keep using them anyway.

The short answer

Broad match tells Google to show your ad for anything it decides is related to your keyword, which for "furnace repair" includes job searches, how-to searches, product searches and plain curiosity. Agencies use it because it is fast to set up, it spends the budget reliably, and it keeps the impression and click numbers on the monthly report looking healthy.

What the three match types actually do

Google gives you three ways to tell it when your ad should show.

  • Exact match shows your ad for that search and close variants of it. "furnace repair near me" and "furnace repair nearby." Tight, expensive per click, and almost every click is a real prospect.
  • Phrase match shows your ad for searches that include the meaning of your phrase. "emergency furnace repair tonight," "best furnace repair company." Still buying intent, a bit wider.
  • Broad match shows your ad for anything Google's system thinks is related. "furnace," "hvac careers," "heating system diagram," "furnace filter size." The net is wide, and most of what it catches is not a customer.

Google's own defaults nudge new campaigns toward broad match, and the interface recommends it constantly, because broad match spends more money. That is not a conspiracy; it is the business model. Your job, or your agency's job, is to say no.

What broad match costs an HVAC shop, in real rows

Here is what a mixed broad-match account looks like after a month, with the kind of search terms that show up in nearly every audit we do. The numbers are typical, not from any one client.

  • "hvac salary," "hvac technician jobs," "hvac apprenticeship": 40 to 80 clicks a month at $4 to $8 each. Job seekers. Zero jobs.
  • "how to fix furnace not igniting," "furnace blowing cold air fix": do-it-yourself searchers. A few will call eventually; most will watch a video.
  • "furnace filter 16x25x1," "nest thermostat": product shoppers. Not hiring anyone.
  • "hvac school near me," "hvac certification cost": students.
  • "furnace repair near me," "ac repair [your city]," "no heat emergency service": the actual customers. Often a quarter of the clicks, and most of the calls.

On a $1,000 budget that split means $300 to $500 bought nothing that could ring your phone. At the 2026 benchmark of about $9 a click and $104 a lead, that is the difference between 10 leads and 6. The full cost picture is in what Google Ads really cost an HVAC company in 2026.

Why agencies use it anyway

It is fast

Building an exact and phrase match campaign for one service takes real keyword work and a negative list. Broad match takes five keywords and a budget. When an account manager has forty clients, fast wins.

It spends the budget

Exact match campaigns sometimes under-spend in a slow week because there were not enough real searches. Agencies hate under-spend, because the owner asks why. Broad match never under-spends.

The report looks great

Impressions up. Clicks up. Click-through rate fine. Cost per click low, because job-seeker clicks are cheap. Nowhere on that report is the line "calls from people who wanted to hire you." The report that would show the problem is the search terms report, and it is rarely attached. How to read the reports you do get is in is my HVAC marketing agency ripping me off.

Google recommends it

The account has a recommendations tab and an optimization score, and both push broad match and automated bidding. Agencies that chase a high optimization score end up doing what the interface wants, which is spending more.

ReBoost Ads does not run broad match on your account.

Every service campaign is built on phrase and exact match buying searches, with a negative keyword list that blocks job seekers, students, DIY and product shoppers from day one. The ReBoost Ads team reads the search terms every week and adds to it. Runs in your own Google account, from $197 a month flat.

How to check your own account in ten minutes

  1. Open Keywords and look at the match type column. If most rows say Broad, that is the setup.
  2. Open Search terms for the last 30 days and sort by cost. Count how many of the top 30 rows are a homeowner trying to hire an HVAC company. If it is under half, you have your answer.
  3. Open Negative keywords. A healthy HVAC account has at least a few hundred: jobs, salary, school, training, certification, reddit, diy, how to, parts, filter, manual, and the brand names of equipment people search for when they want to buy a unit online. If the list is short or empty, nobody has been protecting your budget.
  4. Add up the waste. Total the cost of the non-customer rows. That is your monthly bill for broad match.

What good looks like instead

One campaign per service you want more of. Inside it, a small set of phrase and exact match keywords built around how homeowners actually search when they are ready to hire: the service plus "near me," plus the city, plus "emergency" or "same day" or "cost." A negative list that grows every week. A landing page that matches the ad. A budget sized to the real search volume for that service in your area. That structure is the whole argument in why your HVAC Google Ads are not working, and it is how ReBoost Ads builds every account.

There is a place for a little broad match: a small, separate campaign with a tight budget used to discover new buying searches you had not thought of, with every useful term moved into the main campaign as exact match. That is a tool a careful manager uses on purpose. It is not the way to run the whole account.

What to do if your agency is running broad match

Ask for the search terms report for the last 90 days and the negative keyword list. If they send both quickly and the negative list is long, you probably have a good agency that made one lazy choice, and you can ask them to rebuild the campaigns on phrase and exact. If they stall, or send a report with no search terms, you have learned something about the relationship. Before you leave anyone, make sure you own the ad account and can keep the history; the steps are in who owns your Google Ads account, and the contract traps are in HVAC marketing contract red flags.

Questions owners ask

Google says broad match with smart bidding performs better. Is that wrong?

It can work for large accounts with hundreds of conversions a month, where the system has enough data to learn. A two-truck HVAC shop with 15 leads a month is not that account. The system learns from your clicks, and on broad match most of your clicks are not customers.

Will phrase and exact match cut my reach?

It cuts your reach to people who do not want to hire you. The homeowner with no heat still searches "furnace repair near me," and you still show up.

Can I fix this myself?

Yes, with a few hours and the ten-minute check above as a starting point. If you would rather not, ReBoost Ads sets it up in about ten minutes, in your own account, and watches the search terms every week for you.

What to do this week

Run the ten-minute check. Total the waste. If it is more than the $197 a month ReBoost Ads costs, you already know what to do: reboosthub.com/hvac-ads-builder, 14-day free trial, no setup fee, your own account the whole time.

Put it to work

Check your HVAC Google Ads account for broad match waste

  1. Check match types

Open Keywords and read the match type column. Mostly Broad means the account is set up to spend, not to book.

  2. Read the search terms

Open Search terms for the last 30 days, sort by cost, and count how many of the top 30 rows are a homeowner trying to hire an HVAC company.

  3. Open the negative keyword list

A healthy HVAC account blocks jobs, salary, school, training, reddit, diy, how to, parts, filters and manuals. A short list means nobody is protecting the budget.

  4. Add up the waste

Total the cost of the non-customer rows. That is the monthly bill for broad match.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is broad match in Google Ads?

A keyword setting that lets Google show your ad for any search it considers related to the keyword. For an HVAC account that includes job searches, training searches, DIY repair searches and product shopping, none of which hire a contractor.

Why do agencies use broad match on HVAC accounts?

It is fast to set up, it always spends the budget, it keeps impressions and clicks high on the monthly report, and Google's interface recommends it. The waste shows up only in the search terms report, which is rarely attached.

How do I check if my account runs broad match?

Open Keywords and read the match type column, then open Search terms for the last 30 days sorted by cost and count how many of the top rows are homeowners trying to hire you. Then check the negative keyword list; a healthy HVAC account has hundreds.

Does ReBoost Ads use broad match?

No. Every service campaign is built on phrase and exact match buying searches with a negative keyword list from day one, in your own Google account, and the search terms are reviewed weekly.
